Ger Rijkers presented for a workshop in the European Parliament. Also Albert Flynn from EFSA as well as David Richardson from DPR Nutrition (UK) spoke to the Members of European Parliament.
The room was filled with MEP's, assistants to MEP's as well as representatives from Industry. The discussion focused on how you should/could communicate to consumers and whether the evaluation of EFSA of general function claims hadn’t be to stringent. Afterwards we had lunch with Julie Girling (the MEP who had organized the workshop): speakers plus EFSA people (Juliane Kleiner, Alberto Spagnoli, Victoria Villamar) and Basil Mathioudakis. Basil confessed that every day he eats fresh Greek yoghurt. During our departure he also said that something should be done about probiotics.

It’s been an interesting experience. I got the feeling that now for the first time the MEP's have learnt that there is REAL SCIENCE being done on probiotics, and not only Industry making a big fuss. Don’t know what exactly the next steps will be. In 2 weeks there will be the vote in the EP. Whether there will be any amendments is not sure at this moment.

There already is a report from Shane Starling on NutraIngredients.
